Connecticut in October is made for dates that happen outdoors. You get color, crisp air and an easy reason to keep talking on a long walk. Here are three plans that work for a first or second date.

Drive the western foliage loop

Start in New Preston, loop Lake Waramaug, then follow Route 7 along the Housatonic to the West Cornwall Covered Bridge. Finish on the Litchfield Green for lunch. Sharing the drive leaves plenty of time to talk.

Questions

When are Gillette Castle tours open in the fall?

Tours run on weekends and holidays from after Labor Day until Columbus Day. After that the castle closes, apart from a holiday tour program on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Booking ahead is a good idea.

Do we pay to park at Connecticut state parks?

At Sleeping Giant, Gillette Castle and Hammonasset, parking is free for cars registered in Connecticut. Out-of-state cars pay a fee, which is lower on weekdays.

Is a hike a good first date?

An easy, popular trail is a good choice, because you can talk as you walk and leave whenever you like. Tell a friend where you are going, and meet at the trailhead in your own car.
